Group Homes and Foster Homes

I have been in many different foster homes with different types of families. Some of the foster homes that I was in were not always that good because some of the foster parents were just in it for the money from the government each month. This resulted in lots of kids in care getting put into homes where they would get mistreated and looked at like they are just a walking paycheck. The sad thing is that lots of the kids that have to deal with this normally don’t talk to their workers about it because they think that it will not get any better. But there are some good foster homes and foster parents out there.

The thing is that it is hard to know what ones are good because it is easy for the social workers to be lied to by the foster parents because lots of the social workers don’t put much into finding good places. They normally just put the kids into the first home that says that they will take you in. One time, I was put into a foster home where, since I was the oldest male in the house, I was made to do all the yard work year-round. I was in another foster home where the parent’s adopted son would pull weapons on me and would threaten my life. I have had a foster parent threaten to hit me with a broom handle just because I was spinning it around.

There was one really good one that I did go to. The foster parents were nice to me, but the sad thing was that I was not able to stay there for a long time because it was only a temporary placement. If I was able to stay there longer I would have been able to do more things in my youth and could have stayed as a kid longer. Group home care is different because you have people that go to school and have special training to work at the group homes most of the time. Also, there is always a different staff member that is at the house all the time because the only ones that sleep there are the youth that live at that house.

The staff that are there are just there to make sure that the youth are safe and eat food and go to school and so on. With group homes, you can get kicked out if you stay out past the time you were told to be back at the house, unless you were given the okay to be out later. They always make notes for the other staff that are working of all things that are going on so that youth can’t pull any fast ones on anyone.
